Wrocław – What to do with Kids? TOP 8 Tips for a Great Weekend with Family.

Photo by Mihaela Holhos on Unsplash

Flying to Poland? I hope you’ll have time to visit the capital of Lower Silesia! It’s said to be the second best place after Cracow for sighseeing, however,
I would say it’s the best one. Today, we are going to slightly change the main subject of this site and we are going to talk about kids. Lately, I’ve had a great pleasure to receive in Poland visitors from abroad. My friends from the United States came to Wrocław with their families for a few days, what was a perfect incentive for me to familiarize with the subject of local attractions for children. I didn’t realise it before that there are so many!

It doesn’t matter if it’s a holiday, christmas, spring break or just sunny or rainy weekend. I guess that every parent struggled once in a while with that problem – how to best organise free time with their children. If you are still puzzled, this article is for you! Well, Wrocław is a perfect place for everyone – families, students, travelers. A perfect place for creative minds, who love to spend their time in a productive way. The attractions are open throughout the whole year, so you can plan your trip here regardless of the season.

I guess that football pitches, playgrounds or cinemas can be found in every corner, therefore I came up with an idea that it’d be nice if someone described distinguished local places.
So, what are the best places in Wrocław? Where to go, when and how to prepare for a trip?

Dwarf Hunting

I know, from my personal experience, that dwarf hunting is one of the best attractions in Wrocław for both parents and children. These little figures of gnomes are dispersed and hidden in strategic places in the whole city. To ease your explorations, try to get the city map from any tourist information spot. In case that you are out of time, don’t get to worried about the little dwarfs, because surely you’ll bump on them during your city excursions.

Hydropolis – recreation and education at once, in the Center of science and knowledge about the water.

Place, in which you will get to know some interesting facts and secrets of H2O. With the interactive panels, models, replications and use of new innovative technologies, your offsprings will study and play at once. Maybe they will discover their new passion? I would suggest you to dedicate more or less 2 hours of your daily agenda for this attraction.

Address: ul. Na Grobli 17
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9.00 AM – 6.00 PM, Sat-Sun 10.00 AM – 8.00 PM

Throughout the year you can go to the best amusement park, full of trampolines – JumpWorld – on the Otmuchowska 15, open everyday 10.00 AM to 10 PM. Either you can visit the Climbing Center Tarnogaj (Nyska 59, the reservation is obligatory!). During the winter try ice-skating at  SPISKA (open from November to March) Spiska is waiting for you on the Spiska 1 street, in Wrocław. You don’t have to worry about the skates, since you can rent them for a few bucks.

Gazeta Wrocławska

Zoo Wrocław – nearby the nature and animals

The most popular zoo in the country is located exactly here, in Wrocław – so take advantage of this opportunity and come see dozens of exotic species of animals from tall around the world, and not only! Afrykarium is another place, which will make you feel as if you were on the Black Continent. During summer months children aged 2-10 can enjoy the ride on the pony! I promise you will spend the entire day here having fun; so it would be better if you don’t plan anything else for that day 😉

Revolut – multi currency card and its traps.

revolut and multi-currency cards

Digital cards with multi-currency payment option – I just have realised that since few months people got crazy about them. Almost all of my friends already have/downloaded/ordered Revolut or other digital card and hardly believes that life without another plastic card in the pocket is still possible. When did it become impossible to operate everyday tasks without it? Do you remember yet times without Netflix? We were somehow able to watch our fav series on-line back then.

Trying to avoid being ignorant, I tried it. I downloaded the app and ordered my Revolut card. Curiously I’ve checked, what are the differences between Revolut services and cards that were available so far. After the 2-weeks long holiday, I totally understood its phenomenon.

I wasn’t the first one to question the issue – some rational bloggers yet pointed out the drawback of these services. As Jan Fijor, the author of www.milionerstwo.pl had observed, this revolution isn’t secure nor prestigious. It also isn’t that cheap or free, as it seems. He let himself got trapped once by this app.

“Multi-currency card varies from others in the way that they create an illusion of a comfort. – he says.

I am not going to limit myself and stay on the beaten track. In XXI century we have got so many different payment options that, in effect, the cash becomes irrelevant. We cannot deny its success – great design, modern and colorful card and easy-to-use mobile app make the perfect UX.

Travelling with multi-currency card

It’s main customer target include – travelers, tourists, foreign exchange students and all those people who are willing to spend their money abroad.  There’s no issue with the card, as long as you stay in one of the big european countries – it pays for all your needs, products and services you order. Under the plain control of the mobile app (thank God for the roaming in EU, now we can spend holiday plugged in to the Internet. Don’t forget that these currencies are exchangeable in every.

Let’s suppose that you’re hitchhiking across the South America, or just making a reservation for holiday on a tropical island. I bet there are places in the world which does not accept credit card payments. Not even payments made by such innovative card as Revolut, despite the illusion of the modern world which surround us. What I mean is that still in XXI century, there are so many countries which values strong currencies (such as euro or dollars) over their own local money. To give you some living example – last time I went to Dominican Republic I was given quite big discount for covering my accommodation fee in USD.

Human error

Although it’s hard to admit – We all have been mistaken some time. I bet that the majority of users committed some kind of tiny mistakes while commissioning transfers or exchanging money.

Holiday mode on

You are on holiday, living the time of your life with your friends. You pay with a multi-currency card for your orders at the bar. The next day, you’re looking at your account balance terrified and wonder how could you spend that much. Maybe someone deceived you? Probably, it was just you.

I know, it was hard for me to swallow, too. Multi-currency card makes us lazy. This card knows from which wallet is has to take your money out, BUT, when it runs out, the Revolut app makes you pay with available currency. That makes you pay not only the price of the drink, but also charges you for conversion. Additional costs includes also charges for mistaken exchange orders. None of us is willing to tell about their own pitfalls, but this is one of Revolut’s sources of huge income.

I understand that the rapidity of the app is its advantage. Unfortunately, it lacks the option which would protect us, users, from our own mistakes. We do not have the possibility to control the order data before we click send button, therefore all transfers or conversions are carried out instantly.

Hidden payments

So. Revolut says its services are free. Let’s analyse their income sources then. Even though exchanges and transfers are for free, there is plenty of additional extra charged services that come along with the card. For instance, payments and withdrawals on weekends. The standard free withdrawal limit is 200 GBP per month, which is, let’s say, not so much money for the foreign trip / holiday abroad. Every amount above that means extra commissions.

Transfers – Usuallly, free transfers are executed within 2-3 working days, exactly the same time as in any commercial bank. If you are in a hurry, I bet you’d pay extra for the instant transfer anyway. Or to upgrade your account to premium, for an extra charge as well.

Euro exchange rate – (at the date of 26.03.2019)

Bureaux de change in Wrocław4,2954
Walutomat4,295
Revolut4,296
TransferWise4,297
NBP4,337
Santander4,443

As it is shown in the table above, Revolut is doing quite good, as it offers exactly the same exchange rate as the regular exchange point in Wrocław.

Pay attention to

All in all, the multi-currency credit card is, as I could experience it, an excellent payment tool as long as we use it rarely and prudently. In other case we can be exposed to huge transactions’ fees.

  • Wide spreads, which amounts to 10% (spread – the difference between sale/buy price)
  • High costs of using the ATM machines (after crossing the limit of 200 GBP)
  • High costs of other services
  • Exchange commission
  • Weekend rates
  • No prevention system against human mistakes

Revolut – Post Scriptum

Apart from everyday pros and cons that this app gives you, there are few facts that you, as a user, should be aware of. I’ll let myself list them.

Legal aspects

Certainly, this case brings the most discussions and insecurities among Revolut customers. Officially, the app is completely legal but, among other, concentration camps were legal as well. Were they safe, ethical and good for everyone?

Revolut is not a banking institution.

It is incorporated as a financial enterprise that belongs to fintech branch. Therefore, it is not controlled by state authorities. This company was found only 4 years ago. I am not about being radically skeptical, however, can this company be a reliable place to keep our capital or resources ?

Poor management

The 2019 started badly for Revolut. During the last 3 months we could have find out that this StartUp struggles with many formal and administrative cases. We care about our resources, don’t we? Recently, it occurred that in 2018, the anti-fraud protection was switched off for three months straight for this digital card. In effect, people were given the opportunity to conduct many illegal transactions. We, indirectly, supported that.

I would like to ask you, if you’ve experienced any inconvenience while using multi-currency cards or spending money abroad? Which payment option would you choose for your holiday budget?

Apple TV: The Next Chapter in TV History

vivian vance

History before the Apple TV. On Monday, January 19, 1953, I Love Lucy aired on CBS, just like it had done every Monday for the previous two years. That week’s episode, “Lucy Goes to the Hospital,” filmed in black-and-white and shot on 35 mm film, was a seminal moment in broadcasting that signified how far television had come. Just 30 years prior, this medium didn’t even exist. Now millions of families crowded around a small plastic box watching Lucy and Ricky, turning the dials to increase the volume.

On that evening, 72 percent of all televisions sets were tuned to CBS

a record yet to be broken…

Sixty years later, that same episode is being streamed on the on-demand service Hulu Plus, possibly on an HD television via the most-talked about digital media player out there — Apple TV. The setup box, released in its fourth incarnation on October 30, 2015, is a reminder of how television has evolved since “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” first aired. But how did the medium get to this point? And can Apple redefine the television blueprint for the next 60 years?

The Apple Revolution

If you asked a contestant on Family Feud, another perennially popular TV show that first aired decades ago, to name something associated with Apple, he probably wouldn’t mention the Cupertino-based company’s digital media player. But as Apple supercharges its marketing efforts in the coming months, expect the micro-console to be every bit as recognizable as the iPod, iPad and iPhone in 2016. The company describes the setup box as “the future of television,” offering content from WatchESPN, Netflix, HBO NOW and Lucy’s new home, Hulu.
If Apple’s marketing push is as successful as the promotional drive for the recent iPhone 6s, Tim Cook and the gang can expect big things from the online television streamer.

A one-minute teaser for the fourth generation of Apple TV — the first to feature the new tvOS operating system — has already garnered more than five million views on YouTube since it was uploaded on December 8, 2015.

VPN – Television + Hulu, HBO, Netflix

Many people ask me about my VPN and of course how to use:

  • Netflix
  • HBO
  • Hulu
  • BBC

…when travelling outside the US, UK or Canada. It is a fact that more and more people spend months travelling around the world for business. When I am in such a situation, I want to have at least some contact with my culture and homeland. Taking our Apple TV with us or simply watching TV on our laptop is not an issue. What is an issue is our foreign IP address, which causes the aforementioned providers to deny us service. Even though we’re still paying for it, we cannot watch our TV.
